Web: www.wigreatriverroad.org Description:The 2,069-mile Great River Road borders the Mississippi River through the states ofMississippi, Arkansas, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. The Wisconsin segment of the byway flanks the Mississippi River along the state's western border, displaying the culture and heritage of 33 river towns. Travelers can stopat the 30 or more state historical markers and archaeologicalsites, and also at the many local museums, which tell the stories of early Indianoccupants, the French fur traders and explorers, the lead miningboom, the steamboat era, and the lumber barons. Recreational opportunities include 50 local parks and beaches, and 12 state and 3 national recreational resources.
Legth: 249 miles (Wisconsin section); 2,069 miles (entire byway). Start/Endpoint: The northern gateway of the Wisconsin Great River Road at Prescott is 30 miles southeast of Saint Paul, Minnesota, via US 10 and US 61. Thesouthern gateway is near the east end of the US 20 MississippiRiver bridge in Dubuque, Iowa at the Illinois state line.
