In west-central SD, west of Pierre; created Nov, 1914 from Stanley County. Name Origin: For Haakon VII (1872-1957), king of Norway; the name was suggested by Hugh J. McMahon, an Irish immigrant who wished to gain the votes of the Norwegian immigrants in favor of the division of Stanley County into two new counties
