Zurabashvili, Avlipii Davidovich

 

Born Feb. 2 (15), 1902, in the village of Bodbiskhevi, in what is now Signakhi Raion, Georgian SSR. Soviet psychiatrist, academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Georgian SSR (1955) and of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1960); Honored Scientific Worker of the Georgian SSR (1946). Member of the CPSU since 1940.

In 1926, Zurabashvili graduated from the medical department of the University of Tbilisi; since 1937 he has been director of the M. M. Asatiani Scientific Research Institute of Psychiatry. His principal works have been devoted to the etiology, pathogenesis, clinical aspects, syndromes, and treatment of schizophrenia, epilepsy, oligophrenia, and certain other psychoses. He advanced the hypothesis of the structural-dynamic reversibility of the most subtle changes in the parenchymatous formations of nerve tissue. He created an original trend in neuromorphology— the experimental and clinicomorphological investigation of synapses. Zurabashvili is a member of the International Brain Research Organization and a member of the presidium of the Society of Neuropathologists and Psychiatrists of the Georgian SSR. He has been awarded two Orders of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and medals.
