House Appropriations Committee

A committee of the U.S. House of Representatives responsible for drafting legislation to spend federal money. According to the U.S. Constitution, any federal spending must be authorized by legislation. The Appropriations Committee spearheads that effort in the House. It consists of approximately 60 members, most of whom belong to the House majority party. It was established in 1865. See also: House Ways and Means Committee.
