These nuclei (a) regulate the preganglionic motor neurons of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, (b) control the secretions of the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland, (c) secrete hormones (e.g., oxytocin and vasopressin) through the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland, and (d) modulate the limbic system (e.g., via the mammillary bodies).
