House, John Henry

(1845–1936) missionary, educator; born in Painesville, Ohio. A Congregational minister, he devoted his life to missionary work. In Bulgaria (1874–91) he directed the American College and Theological Institute; in Salonika, Greece (1894–1931) he was founding director of the American Farm School (1902–27), which is still an important institution for training young Greeks in methods of modern agriculture.
