Hedge Hyssop (Gratiola), a genus of herbaceous plants of the family Scrophulariaceae. There are about 20 species, spread predominantly in the nontropical areas of the world. In the USSR there are two species. The medicinal herb hedge hyssop (G. officinalis), a perennial with white or pinkish flowers, is found in Europe, Asia, and North America. It grows in wet, swampy areas, along the banks of bodies of water, and on water meadows. The roots have a laxative, emetic, and diuretic effect. The plant is poisonous.
