Web: www.nationalroadpa.org Description:America's first interstate highway, the National Road was built to tolink the people and cities along the Easternseaboard to those on the frontiers west of the Allegheny Mountains. Authorized by Congress in1806, construction of the road began in Cumberland, Maryland in 1811.The road reached Vandalia, then the Illinois state capitol, in 1839 andlater was completed to the Illinois border at East Saint Louis, opening a link to the water route of the Mississippi.Points of interest along the Pennsylvania section of the route include Fort Necessity National Battlefield and Washington Tavern, Friendship Hill National Historic Site (the country estate of Albert Gallatin), Coal & Coke Heritage Center, Pennsylvania Trolley Museum, and historic Old Petersburg/Addison Tollhouse, one of only two tollhouses still remaining on the Historic National Road.
Legth: 90 miles (Pennsylvania); 824 miles (entire route). Start/Endpoint: The east/west route runs from Baltimore, Maryland, to the Mississippi Riverat the Eads Bridge in East Saint Louis, Illinois. It crosses six states:Maryland, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. ThePennsylvania section of the route runs along US 40 from the Maryland state line near Addison to the West Virginia state line near West Alexander. Designation/Year: All-American Road (2002).
