The 2,448-mile route passed through Illinois,Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California.The road was decommissionedin 1985 in favor of the new interstate highway system and today only1,410 miles of the original route in three states (Illinois, New Mexicoand Arizona) have been designated as National Scenic Byway.The New Mexico section of the route offers a cultural mix of Native American heritage, old Spanish Pueblos, 19th Century ranches, and remnants of authentic Route 66-era tourist attractions.

Start/Endpoint: The New Mexico section of the byway runs east/west across the state from the Texas state line to the Arizona state line. It includes a double loop near Albuquerque, which offers branch routes northeast to Santa Fe and southwest to Los Lunas. Time to Allow: 16 hours (New Mexico section); 5-6 days (entire byway). Designation/Year: National Scenic Byway (2000).
