Heemskerck, Maarten van

(mär`tən vän hāms`kĕrk), 1498–1574, Dutch painter. His family name was van Veen. He studied in Haarlem under Scorel and in Rome from 1532 to 1534. His Italianate paintings won him a high reputation in Haarlem, but his most valuable work is contained in his sketchbooks (Berlin), which include drawings of ancient monuments in Rome and sketches of the construction of St. Peter's. The Metropolitan Museum has his portrait of his father.
