Heimlich manoeuvre

A first aid procedure used to try to relieve choking caused by an inhaled foreign body such as a bolus of food. The upper part of the abdomen is encircled from behind, the hands are clasped together in front and the fists are suddenly and firmly forced upwards into the gap between the lower ribs so as to compress the air in the chest.
