Haggin, James Ben Ali

(1827–1914) lawyer, businessman; born in Harrodsburg, Ky. He studied law in his father's office and was admitted to the bar in 1845. Emigrating west in 1850, he opened (with Lloyd Tevis) a Sacramento law office that over the following decades became one of the chief financial powers of California. His interests included mining and agricultural development. His Kentucky horse farm produced a series of champion racers in the 1880s.
