释义 | Hitchcock, EdwardHitchcock, Edward(1793–1864) geologist, educator; born in Deerfield, Mass. An ordained Congregational minister (1821–25), he remained a lifelong classicist and theologian after resigning his pulpit to become professor (1825–64) and president (1845–54) of Amherst College. He concurrently served as trustee and lecturer at Mount Holyoke Female Seminary (now College) (1836–64). Hitchcock's research as state geologist of Massachusetts (1830) and Vermont (1857–61) resulted in his major contributions to the geology, glaciology, and paleontology of New England. His pioneer studies of fossil dinosaur footprints founded the science of ichnology. |
