Heizer, Robert F. (Fleming)

(1915–79) archaeologist, anthropologist; born in Denver, Colo. A pioneer in ecologically-oriented archaeology, Heizer taught at the University of California: Berkeley (1946–75). He was a leading authority on pre-Columbian Californian archaeology and Mexican and Central American prehistory. He reported (with J.A. Graham, 1976) revolutionary evidence of Maya civilization originating on the Pacific coast of Guatemala.
