Hidaka-Sammyaku

mountains in Japan in the south of the island of Hokkaido. The mountains measure approximately 100 km in length and range in elevation from 1,400 to 1,800 m, rising to a maximum of 2,052 m at Mount Poroshiri. They are composed of granites in the axial region and metamorphic rock in the peripheral zones. They stretch to the Pacific Ocean in the south. The western slopes are gradual, and the eastern slopes steeper. Marine terraces are found along the coast. There are evergreen and mixed forests, with birch and cedar groves on the upper slopes. There are chromite deposits at Abuta.
