Homo habilis

An extinct hominid of the genus Homo that lived between 2.3 and 1.4 million years ago in Africa in the early Pleistocene period. H habilis was short, but had a less protruding face and a higher, rounder and larger brain cavity (±650 cc) than Australopithecus (±450 cc). H habilis was a tool-maker—from whence the translation of the name, “handyman”—and was the earliest known Homo until the discovery of H gautengensis in 2010.
