alpha receptor
al′pha-recep`tor n. a site on a cell that, upon interaction with epinephrine or norepinephrine, controls vasoconstriction, intestinal relaxation, pupil dilation, and other physiological processes. Compare beta-receptor. [1960–65] ThesaurusNoun | 1. | alpha receptor - receptors postulated to exist on nerve cell membranes of the sympathetic nervous system in order to explain the specificity of certain agents that affect only some sympathetic activities (such as vasoconstriction and relaxation of intestinal muscles and contraction of smooth muscles)alpha-adrenergic receptor, alpha-adrenoceptorsympathetic nervous system - originates in the thoracic regions of the spinal cord; opposes physiological effects of the parasympathetic: reduces digestive secretions; speeds the heart; contracts blood vesselsreceptor - a cellular structure that is postulated to exist in order to mediate between a chemical agent that acts on nervous tissue and the physiological response |
alpha receptor
alpha receptor A pair of G protein-coupled cell membrane receptors in the sympathetic nervous system, which evoke an excitatory response of smooth muscle cells to catecholamines. Alpha1 (Gq) coupled receptors cause smooth muscle contraction, resulting in vasoconstriction in the skin, GI tract, kidney and brain, as well as causing smooth muscle contraction in the ureter, vas deferens, arrector pili (hair–“goosebumps”), pregnant uterus, and elsewhere. Alpha1 receptor activation is also linked to glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis in fat and liver, sweating, and sodium absorption in the kidneys. Alpha2 (Gi) coupled receptors inhibit insulin secretion, trigger glucagon release (pancreas), contract GI sphincters, inhibit presynaptic release of noradrenaline in the CNS, and increase platelet aggregation.alpha receptor Related to alpha receptor: beta receptorSynonyms for alpha receptornoun receptors postulated to exist on nerve cell membranes of the sympathetic nervous system in order to explain the specificity of certain agents that affect only some sympathetic activities (such as vasoconstriction and relaxation of intestinal muscles and contraction of smooth muscles)Synonyms- alpha-adrenergic receptor
