As Parsons suggests, the term Herrschaft has no adequate translation in English. Parsons and Timasheff were attempting to bring out more clearly the distinction in Weber's work between POWER (Macht) - the capacity possessed by a SOCIAL ACTOR to carry out his or her own will ‘despite resistance’ from others – and Herrschaft.
