It is one of Japan's most rapidly growing urban centers. Food processing, electronics, beer, lumbering, woodworking, and printing are the major industries. ..... A commercial and industrial center, the city's main industries are fishing, shipbuilding, and food processing. Of interest is the Goryokaku, the fort where the Tokugawa shogun made his last stand. Hakodatea city and port in Japan, on the southern coast of Hokkaido. Population, 303,700 (1974). In addition to the construction and repair of ships, industry is represented by petroleum refining, fish canning, sawmilling, and the manufacture of machine tools. The city also has chemical, wood-products, and cement industries. Hakodate’s port handled 33.5 million tons of cargo in 1975. The city has a university.
