Grigorii Istoma
Istoma, Grigorii
(Istoma Malyi). Russian diplomat of the late 15th and early 16th centuries.
In 1496, Istoma was sent to Denmark for diplomatic negotiations. Because of complexities of Russian-Swedish relations, he could not cross the Baltic and instead set out by sea from the mouth of the Severnaia Dvina. Istoma went around the Kola and Scandinavian peninsulas and reached the city of Trondheim, from which he made his way overland to Bergen and then to Copenhagen. In so doing, he established the possibility, long before the English navigator R. Chancellor did so, of carrying on relations between the Russian government and Western Europe by way of the northern sea route.
