A gulf of the Caribbean Sea on the coast of Central America. Depth. 22–54 m; at the entrance more than 2,000 m. Average annual water temperature, 27° C; salinity about 36 parts per thousand. Mixed tides, 0.7 m in height. The ports are Puerto Cortes and Puerto Barrios.
