Ilovaiskii, Dmitriiivanovich

 

Born 1832; died 1920. Russian historian. Born in the city of Ranenburg, now Chaply-gin, Lipetsk Oblast.

Ilovaiskii graduated from Moscow University in 1854. His first monographs, History of the Riazan Principality (1858) and The Grodno Sejm of 1793 (1870), had considerable scholarly significance. In the former Ilovaiskii used a broad range of sources that had not earlier been explored. In later life, he left research work. Ilovaiskii was the author of widely used textbooks on Russian and world history for use in secondary schools. These texts were very conservative and were written from a monarchist point of view.
