Its schools of philosophy and astronomy declined after the founding of Alexandria in 332 B.C., but the city never wholly lost importance until the Christian era. The Egyptian name was On; little of the city remains. Heliopolis(literally, city of the sun; ancient Egyptian, Iunu; present-day Al Matariyah, near Cairo), one of the most ancient cities of Egypt. It appeared in the fourth millennium B.C. The city was the main center of the cult of the god Re-Atum.
