Hübschmann, Heinrich

Hübschmann, Heinrich

Born July 1, 1848, in Erfurt; died Jan. 21, 1908, in Strasbourg. German philologist. Representative of the neogrammarian school of comparative Indo-European philology. Professor at the University of Strasbourg.

Hübschmann was most celebrated as an Armenian and Iranian scholar. On the basis of sound correspondences, he was the first to establish the special position of the Armenian language, which had previously been related to the Iranian group, and the Iranian affinity of the Afghan (Pashto) language, which had been considered earlier as Indic or intermediate between the Indic and Iranian languages.
