HaliotidaeHaliotidaea family of gastropod mollusks of the subclass Prosobranchia. The ear-shaped shell is up to 20 cm long and has a short, slightly raised spiral that is perforated with a row of apertures. The inner surface of the shell is nacreous. There are six genera, with approximately 70 species. The Haliotidae inhabit rocky shallows, predominantly in the tropics and subtropics. The USSR has one species, Sulculus discus, which is found along Moneron Island. Commercially valued for their flesh and shells, the mollusks are bred in the USA, Japan, China, and the countries of Indochina. Haliotidae
