Howells, John Mead

(1868–1959)American architect who worked with McKim Mead and White before setting up an office with Isaac Newton Phelps (1867–1944) in New York. The firm designed the Madison Square Church Mission House (1989), NYC and Woodbridge Hall, Yale University (1901), New Haven, CT. Howells designed the Chicago Tribune Tower (1925), with Raymond Hood, the Daily News Building (1930), and Beekman Tower (1928), both in New York City, with Art Deco modeling. He was a sensitive restorer of early American architecture, and wrote Lost Examples of Colonial Architecture (1931) and The Architectural Heritage of the Merrimack (1941).
