Halophile Microorganisms

Halophile Microorganisms

bacteria, yeast, or mold fungi that are able to grow in the presence of high concentrations of sodium chloride (NaCl). Halophile microorganisms are resistant to high osmotic pressure and to the specific action of NaCl. Some halophile microorganisms develop in liquid culture media containing 25 percent NaCl but do not grow in its absence. Halophile microorganisms live in oceans, seas, saline lakes, solonchaks, and elsewhere. Many species of halophile microorganisms form orange or red pigments (carotenoids). The development of such halophile microorganisms on saltwater fish or the salty skin of animals is accompanied by the appearance of red spots.
