Grosul, Iakim Sergeevich

 

Born Sept. 8 (21), 1912. Soviet historian, corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1966), academician and president of the Academy of Sciences of the Moldavian SSR (from 1961). Became a member of the CPSU in 1939.

Grosul is a specialist in the history and historiography of 19th- and 20th-century Moldavia. He is the author or coauthor of the monographs The Peasants of Bessarabia, 1812–1861 (1956) and The Peasant Reform of the 1860’s and 1870’s in Bessarabia (1956), the two-volume History of the Moldavian SSR, and many other works. Grosul was a deputy to the fifth and sixth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. He has been awarded two Orders of Lenin and two other orders.
