Between the islands of Kauai and Molokai; bordered on west by Kauai Channel and on southeast by Kaiwi Channel. Established 1905 (prior to statehood); legally the City and County of Honolulu with one municipal government; includes the islands of Oahu and small ones northwest of Kauai. About 80% of the state's population lives in Honolulu County. Name Origin: From two Polynesian words, hono 'fair haven' and lulu 'calm' or 'quiet,' referring to Mamala Bay, into which Pearl Harbor opens.
