Hamburg Antifascist Organization

 

an underground organization active in Hamburg under the leadership of the Communist Party of Germany beginning at the end of 1941. About 200 participated, led by B. Bästlein, F. Jacob, and R. Abshagen. The antifascists disseminated leaflets calling for the overthrow of the Hitler regime and termination of the war. The organization had cells in more than 30 major factories and shipyards of Hamburg. In doing the underground work contact was maintained with prisoners of war and foreign workers who had been impressed into labor service in Germany. The Hamburg antifascist organization was connected with the principal antifascist organizations in other regions of the country. It was smashed at the end of 1943.
