Textiles, metalware, machinery, and chemicals are produced, oil is refined, and food is processed. Coal mines are nearby. The founder of the Choson (Yi) dynasty, the last imperial line of Korea, was born in Hamhung.

Hamhung’s textile industry produces silk and wool. The city also produces electrical equipment, agricultural machinery, footwear, food and condiments, tobacco products, and building materials. Hydroelectric systems are located near Hamhung on the Changjin and Pujon rivers.
