(häm`ho͝ong`), Jap. Kanko, city (1993 pop. 709,730), capital of South Hamgyong prov., E central North Korea. It is a leading port for Korean foreign trade as well as a major industrial center. Textiles, metalware, machinery, and chemicals are produced, oil is refined, and food is processed. Coal mines are nearby. The founder of the Choson (Yi) dynasty, the last imperial line of Korea, was born in Hamhung.

(also Kanko), a city in the People’s Democratic Republic of Korea. Capital of Hamgyong-namdo Province. Population, more than 200,000. Hamhung, which includes the port of Hungnam, is administered by the central government and has the rights of a province. Its chemical industry, which is the country’s largest, manufactures such products as plastics and synthetic resins. The city’s heavy machine-building industry produces equipment for the metallurgical, mining, power-engineering, and chemical industries. Nonferrous metallurgy is represented by aluminum smelting. Hamhung’s textile industry produces silk and wool. The city also produces electrical equipment, agricultural machinery, footwear, food and condiments, tobacco products, and building materials. Hydroelectric systems are located near Hamhung on the Changjin and Pujon rivers.
