Hamilton, George Heard

(1910– ) art historian; born in Pittsburgh, Pa. He studied at Yale (B.A. 1932; M.A. 1934; Ph.D. 1942), and Cambridge (M.A. 1971). He taught at Yale (1936–66), Williams College (beginning in 1963), and became the director of the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, Mass. (1966–77). He specialized in the history of 19th- and 20th-century art.
