Located in a lignite-mining area, it is an industrial city, manufacturing glass, bricks, and other products. Hoyerswerda, a transportation junction, is a center for the mining of brown coal in the Lower Lusatian Basin. The new section of the city has a residential complex for the employees of the Schwarze Pumpe Combine.
