honour killing n (Sociology) a murder committed by a male on a female relative considered to have brought dishonour to the family, usually through sexual activity forbidden by religion or tradition honour killing
honour killing The killing of a member—often female—of one’s family or social group by another member of the same family or social group, based on the perpetrators’ belief that the victim has dishonoured the family in some fashion. Frequency The UN estimates 5,000 women die from honour killings/year; women’s groups in the Middle East say the figure it more like 20,000. Dishonourable behaviours or acts Violating the group’s dress code, trying to end or prevent an arranged marriage, sexual activity outside of marriage (or even thinking about it), engaging in homosexual acts. |
