Hydroturbine Stator

the base portion of a hydrotur- bine, designed to transfer the load of the hydraulic unit’s weight and of the water pressure to the building of a hydroelectric power plant. The stator is mounted inside the scroll casing, or volute, of the hydroturbine. A stator with a concrete volute consists of individual piers with flanged ends; the flanges are set in concrete in the exit zone of the chamber. The piers of the stator are shaped such that the whirl of the flow of water from the volute does not change as the water passes through the stator (whirl is the ratio of the tangential velocity component to the axial component). Hydroturbine stators with steel volutes have an upper and a lower collar, to which piers mounted in the flow-through part of the stator are rigidly fastened. The lower collar is concreted. The stators of large hydroturbines are usually welded.
