Hawkins, Augustus (Freeman)

(1907– ) U.S. representative; born in Shreveport, La. Moving to Los Angeles as a boy, he graduated from the University of California and established a real-estate business. He served as a Democratic member of the California State Assembly (1935–62) before going to the U.S. House of Representatives (1963–89). He chaired the Committee on House Administration and the Committee on Education and Labor during the Reagan Administration.
