Established: 1972.
Location:In the Hanalei Valley on the northern coast of Kauai.
Special Features:Refuge is located on the on the north side of picturesque Hanalei Valley, encircled by waterfall-draped mountains. Taro is grown on the refuge by local farmers, continuing a practice that stretches back more than 1,200 years in the valley.
Habitats: 917 acres of river bottom land, taro farms, and wooded slopes.
Access: Closed to public use, but refuge wildlife is visible from an overlook on Highway 56.
Wild life: Hawaiian birds, including the endangered Koloa (Hawaiian duck), Hawaiian moorhen, Hawaiian coot, Hawaiian stilt, and the Hawaiian hoary bat.
