a purpose-built site designated for industrial and commercial use which is separate from residential accommodation, often located on the outskirts of major urban conurbations close to motorways and other transportation systems. In the main, industrial estates offer low-cost work space for light manufacturing industries and warehouse distribution facilities. A large proportion of the investment in infrastructure and buildings is provided by local authorities. See INDUSTRIAL LOCATION.
