International Years of the Quiet Sun IQSY

a program of coordinated observations and studies of solar activity and related geophysical phenomena conducted at a time of minimum solar activity (during the “quiet” sun). Scientific institutions from more than 70 countries participated in the IQSY program, carried out in 1964 and 1965, Observations were conducted at a large number (several hundred) of terrestrial stations (for solar, magnetic, ionospheric, auroral, cosmic-ray, and other studies), as well as aboard artificial satellites and sounding rockets. The USSR, the German Democratic Republic, Czechoslovakia, and other socialist countries were active participants in the IQSY. Work on the IQSY program was directed by a special IQSY committee of the International Council of Scientific Unions.

The results of the IQSY observations are stored in World Data Centers, one of which is located in Moscow at the Geophysical Committee of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Comparison of the data of the IQSY with similar data obtained during the International Geophysical Year (IGY), conducted in 1957-58, has made it possible to study the dependence of solar and terrestrial phenomena on the solar activity cycle. The results of the scientific investigations of the IGY were summed up at an international symposium of the IQSY in London in 1967.
