hordeolum, internalAn acute purulent infection (usually caused by staphylococci) of the meibomian glands. It usually causes more discomfort than an external hordeolum as it is located on the conjunctival side of the eyelid. Treatment is similar to that of external hordeolum but surgical incision is required more frequently. Syn. meibomian stye. See chalazion; meibomianitis. |
