International Confederation of Free Trade Unions

International Confederation of Free Trade Unions

A former association of trade unions in the Americas, Asia, Europe and Africa. It formed in 1949 as a number of unions (including the AFL-CIO in the United States) objected to the increasingly communist leanings of the World Federation of Trade Unions. Its membership increased to over 100 million following the end of the Cold War. In 2006, it merged with the World Confederation of Labor to form the International Trade Union Confederation.
