International Meteorological Organizations

organizations created for international cooperation in meteorology. The principal international meteorological organization is the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

In addition to the WMO, international cooperation in meteorology is exercised by other meteorological organizations, whose activity as a rule is coordinated with the WMO. Thus, the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics has the following organizations: the International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Physics (since 1919), the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (since 1957), the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (since 1958), the International Commission on Polar Meteorology, and the Intergovernmental Oceano-graphic Commission (since 1961), which deals with cooperation in marine meteorology. The development of meteorological research in oceanic and polar regions on the basis of observations from a wider network of oceanic stations (weather ships, buoy stations, artificial earth satellites) is an important area of international cooperation within the framework of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research, and the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research.
