apogee

(ap -ŏ-jee) 1. The point in the orbit of the Moon or an artificial Earth satellite that is farthest from the Earth and at which the body's velocity is at a minimum. Strictly the distance to the apogee is taken from the Earth's center. The distance to the Moon's apogee varies; on average it is about 405 500 km. When a spacecraft or satellite reaches apogee, its apogee rocket can be fired to boost it into a more circular orbit or to allow it to escape from Earth orbit. See also perigee. 2. The highest point above the Earth's surface attained by a rocket, missile, etc.

Every orbit is elliptical. When a satellite is at its greatest distance from the Earth, it is at its apogee (from the Greek words apo, meaning “away,” and geios, meaning “earth”).
