intermediate area

an area of the country formerly designated under UK REGIONAL POLICY (for example, parts of the West Midlands and Yorkshire and the Humber) as qualifying for financial and other assistance in order to promote industrial regeneration. Intermediate areas were reconfigured in 2003 as ‘Tier 2 ASSISTED AREAS’ under a joint UK/EUROPEAN UNION regional policy programme.
