intermediate control data

[‚in·tər′mēd·ē·ət kən′trōl ‚dad·ə] (computer science) Control data at a level which is neither the most nor the least significant, or which is used to sort records into groups that are neither the largest nor the smallest used; for example, if control data are used to specify state, town, and street, then the data specifying town would be intermediate control data.
