(body)(ISOC) A non-profit, professional membershiporganisation which facilitates and supports the technicalevolution of the Internet, stimulates interest in andeducates the scientific and academic communities, industry andthe public about the technology, uses and applications of theInternet, and promotes the development of new applications forthe system. The Society provides a forum for discussion andcollaboration in the operation and use of the global Internetinfrastructure.

The Internet Society publishes a quarterly newsletter, theInternet Society News, and holds an annual conference, INET.The development of Internet technical standards takes placeunder the auspices of the Internet Society with substantialsupport from the Corporation for National Research Initiatives under a cooperative agreement with the US FederalGovernment.

It supports Internet bodies such as the IETF and works with governments, organizations and the general public to promote Internet research, information, education and standards. It also helps developing nations design their Internet infrastructure.
