insulin pumps

insulin pumps

Automated devices that deliver an appropriate amount of insulin directly into the bloodstream or via the peritoneal cavity after monitoring the blood sugar levels. Insulin pumps can be implanted and require a battery change at intervals of 3–5 years. Various complications may arise but patients using insulin pumps enjoy better control of blood sugar, fewer hypoglycaemic episodes and do not have to give themselves injections. Most report a better quality of life. It is hoped that insulin pumps will reduce the incidence of major diabetic complications.
