International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons
(ICAN), coalition of nongovernmental organizations that was formed in 2007 to advocate for the banning of nuclear weapons. It is based in Geneva, Switzerland. In 2017 ICAN was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for its lobbying efforts that helped advance the United Nations negotiations that resulted in the adoption and signing (2017) of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. The treaty was opposed by countries that have nuclear weapons.
