Intercisa

a Roman fortification and military city in the province of Lower Pannonia (the modern Hungarian city of Dunaujváros).

Intercisa was built between A.D. 106 and 110 in connection with the wars of Emperor Trajan in Dacia. It had great significance in the defense of the Roman territories against the Sarma-tians, Goths, and Quadi. It ceased to exist as a result of the incursion of the Quadi and Sarmatians at the time of Emperor Valentinian I (fourth century).

In the excavations carried out by Hungarian scholars (1906, 1908–22, 1926, 1932, 1949) three periods of construction were revealed. The first contained the remains of fortifications of earth and wood and the second, of fortifications of stone (built under Emperor Hadrian). The third period dates from the time of Emperor Constantine. Discoveries included a praetorius; dwelling houses of a canabae (a camp city inhabited by soldier’s families, veterans, traders, craftsmen, and the slaves belonging to them), which was established in the second century; a necropolis; and remains of a country villa of the second century.
