Pindemonte, Ippolito
Born Nov. 13, 1753, in Verona; died there Nov. 18, 1828. Italian poet. Brother of G. Pindemonte.
Pindemonte’s first verses, The Mirage (1784) and Rural Idylls (1788), are characterized by sentimentality. In the narrative poem France (1789), he hailed the French Revolution, but later, frightened by Jacobin terror, he lost his revolutionary enthusiasm. In the tragedy Arminio (1804), he condemned Napoleon’s despotism. In 1822 he completed a translation of Homer’s Odyssey, one of the best in Italian.
